3rd Saturday Lecture: A Garden of Words: Calligraphy and The Huntington’s Chinese Garden

The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is partnering with the SDSU Chinese Cultural Center to bring twice-monthly remote educational programming to our community via this series of talks and discussions.  This series offers unique insights into Chinese history, Chinese culture, American history and lifeways of Chinese Americans, with a particular focus on objects represented in the Museum’s permanent collection. 

On June 19th, we will be joined by Dr. Phillip E. Bloom and Heath Fox (moderator).  Dr. Bloom's talk will explore a numer of the more than thirty works of calligraphy commissioned by the Huntington to contemporary artists that serve as models for the inscriptions that adorn rocks, buildings, and entryways of the Huntington's Chinese Garden.  His talk will suggest four foundational perspectives for contemplating calligraphy in a garden.

Biographies:

Dr. Phillip E. Bloom is the June and Simon K.C. Li Curator of the Chinese Garden and director of the Center for East Asian Garden Studies at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, CA. A specialist in Chinese Buddhist art and garden history, he received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2013. Before joining The Huntington in 2017, he taught as an assistant professor at Indiana University, Bloomington, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Tokyo. His research has appeared in English-, Chinese-, and Japanese-language publications.

Heath Fox has a background in the arts and culture sector, and previously served as the Deputy Director of the Museum of Photographic Arts and the San Diego Museum of Art, later serving as Assistant Dean of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego.  In 2012, he started his tenure as Executive Director of the La Jolla Historical Society, where he has led the organization through an important phased of capital development, which also incorporated new and expanded exhibition and education programming.
