3rd Saturday Lecture|Ripples in Time: The Courage and Resilience of Early Chinese American Pioneers

The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is partnering with the SDSU Chinese Cultural Center to bring twice-monthly remote educational programming to our community via this series of talks and discussions.  This series offers unique insights into Chinese history, Chinese culture, American history and lifeways of Chinese Americans, with a particular focus on objects represented in the Museum’s permanent collection. 

On October 17th, we will be joined by author, Russell N. Low, a California-born 4th generation Chinese American physician.  Russell is a great grandson of Hung Lai Wah, a Transcontinental Railroad worker and Tom Ying, a rescued child slave. His story sheds light on the trafficking of young Chinese women in the 1800’s as part of the illegal slave trade. The story of his great grandparents and their descendants has been featured on the History Channel, BBC Radio, National Public Radio, the Voice of America, and is included in the California State Railroad Museum, and the Smithsonian Museum of American History.  Russell’s passion for research, family history, and story telling come together in a recently published novel entitled Three Coins.
