Summary

Lilly Cheng speaks on the meaning of Ubuntu -: I am because you are

Description

The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is partnering with the SDSU Chinese Cultural Center to bring twice-monthly remote educational programming to our community via this series of talks and discussions.  This series offers unique insights into Chinese history, Chinese culture, American history and lifeways of Chinese Americans, with a particular focus on objects represented in the Museum’s permanent collection.

On December 19th we will be joined by Dr. Li-Rong Lilly Cheng, who will present a lecture on the concept of Ubuntu.  A brief description follows:

In Africa, there is a concept known as ‘Ubuntu’ Which means: I am because you are. Ubuntu means the profound sense that we are human only through the humanity of others. If we are to accomplish anything in this world, it will in equal measure be due to the work and achievement of others. Further, human life has meaning as long as it is left in the service of humanity. The session will explore the concept of ubuntu in relationship to the concepts of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. It will further examine the full spectrum from individualism to collectivism.
