Collaboration with El Capitan High School's Global Language and Leadership Program

06/06/2021

The SDCHM's Education Outreach team has been working with an instructor based at El Capitan High School's Global Language and Leadership program; and, in May, Michael Yee delivered a program for Edmond Hare's Chinese Culture class.

Following the early May program, we've been in contact with Edmond's students, in order to provide resources for their end-of-the-year presentations.  A number of students developed presentations exploring specific artifacts from the Museum's collection, such as a silver crown that was produced by the Miao (using the object as a point of entry to discuss customs of the Miao people and the way these speak to how gender is conceptualized within the culture), or a plaque that had been gifted to the San Diego Chamber of Commerce by the Chinese Commercial Commission in the early 20th Century (in this case, using the object to speak about the history of diplomatic relations between the United States and China from the early 20th century).  One student discussed anti-Asian racism, providing an array of resources to combat this phenomenon as part of her presentation.

One of Edmond's students produced a video based on the virtual walking tour of the Asian Pacific Historic District.   We'd like to share this video, produced by Jake, as one interesting example of student work based on Museum education programming:

Thanks to Edmond and his classroom for the good will to collaborate--We're excited to continue working together in the years to come!
